What “current when checked” means

The cited government record showed a current license, registration or certification when HomeCostTotals last checked it. It does not mean that HomeCostTotals inspected the business, reviewed its work, confirmed insurance, guaranteed availability, or recommends it.

Credential scope matters

An EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm record applies to renovation, repair and painting work that may disturb lead-based paint. It is not a general contractor license. State and city records have their own scopes; homeowners should verify which credential applies to the proposed work.

Corrections

Source conflicts and owner corrections are reviewed against supporting evidence. Owner-confirmed fields can be protected from lower-precedence automated imports without turning a claim into a recommendation.

Nationwide inventory method

The directory represents all 50 states and Washington, DC through a curated sample of current public records from the U.S. EPA Lead-Based Paint Professional Locator, supplemented by broader contractor-license records where an official source adapter is available. The EPA intake is capped per jurisdiction and selected to distribute coverage across cities. It is nationwide representation, not an exhaustive list of every eligible business or every trade in every location.

Counts can differ sharply by state because public programs, source availability and source-record volumes differ. A business address establishes where a record is located; it does not establish the company’s full travel or service area.

Publication and indexability

Every profile must resolve to a canonical company slug, service category, city, state and field-level source evidence. A source-backed profile can remain useful when a secondary field is unavailable, but missing direct contact or other quality signals keeps it out of eligible profile sitemaps. Quality gates also exclude stale, duplicate, unresolved or insufficient records. Search filters and query strings remain noindex.

Freshness

Source-check dates and meaningful content-change dates are separate. Re-fetching an unchanged record does not make it appear newly updated. Expired EPA RRP records are not selected for publication.

Organic and paid results

Payment never changes organic ordering. If sponsored inventory is activated later, it references an existing profile, appears as a separate insertion and is labelled “Sponsored.”

Hiring guidance

Check the issuing authority again before hiring. Confirm project fit, actual service area, required licenses, insurance, permits, scope, exclusions, schedule and warranty in writing.
