How to read the index

The Labor Cost Index compares a metro’s selected construction-occupation wage basket with the national basket. The Home Cost Index combines that local labor measure with a national material baseline using a transparent 50/50 representative-project split.

Formula: Home Cost Index = 0.50 × 100 + 0.50 × Labor Cost Index. Materials remain at 100 because HomeCostTotals does not have a sufficiently strong geographic material-price source.
